What is an Ear Infection?
By Dr. Monroe
The ears are a valuable asset, and we often take them for granted. That is until we develop an ear infection. This can be due to either a viral infection or a bacterial infection. To make it even more complex, it affects the middle ear where there are tiny bones in place. This is also the part of the ear where vibrations occur.
While anyone can get an ear infection, they are more likely to occur on children. As a child gets older, they may stop having them as frequently. There is definitely plenty of pain involved though when someone has an ear infection. Fluid is going to build up in the inner ear. That causes an inflammation and that is what creates the pain. This pain can be felt in the ears and even in the jaw.
Most of the time, an ear infection can clear up in a couple of days if it is viral. The use of an over the counter pain reliever can help to reduce the amount of pain that occurs. For children, make sure you only use the right amount of medication for them. Never use any medication that is designed for an adult for them.
For ear infections that are bacterial, they aren't going to clear up on their own. The use of an antibiotic is going to be necessary. This can be in a liquid form for youngsters and a pill form for youths or adults. It is very important to take all of the antibiotics as directed until they are gone. Stopping before that point can result in the bacteria continuing to grow.
It is important to be seen by a doctor for an ear infection. Should the problem persist even after antibiotics tubes or surgery may be required. The use of antibiotics often isn't recommended as the body can build up immunity to it. Never allow ear infections to go untreated as they can result in hearing loss and also in other types of health concerns. The infection may spread to other parts of the body and even get into the bloodstream.
