Preventing Ear Infections
By Dr. Monroe
There are some efforts that can be taken to prevent ear infections. Since they are the result of bacteria or viral elements in the air, do what you can to keep the environment very clean. Washing surfaces, washing your hands often, and other precautions will significantly help with getting things under control. Wash your child's toys too because that is a breeding ground for germs.
Keep children away from second hand smoke as this is a common reason why so many little ones have ear infections. If you are able to do so, breastfeed your child instead of offering a bottle. This will reduce their risk of getting ear infections. There are also more antibodies in the milk from the mother and that means that the child's immune system can be stronger than a child that drinks from a bottle.
Try to limit the number of people your child is exposed to. While all of your friends and family may wish to hold them, that increases the risk of them getting an ear infection due to all of the germs. If you can do so, avoid placing your child in a daycare center where there are plenty of children and plenty of germs to go around.
Always make sure your child gets the vaccinations they need on time. This too can help to increase their immune system. Your doctor can give you a schedule for immunizations that you will be able to follow. When it is cold outside, always cover up the ears on a child or yourself. The excessive wind can result in an ear infection.
Seasonal allergies can often trigger ear infections. Play close attention to the signs that you are about to be targeted by them. Find products that help you to control your allergy symptoms before they manifest. By doing so, you will be able to slow down the nasal problems that can cause fluid in the ears.
For young children that experience chronic ear infections, the doctor may recommend the use of tubes. They are placed into the ears during a short surgical procedure. This will help with reducing the amount of fluid that builds up in the ears.
